Meade lx200 classic parts4/6/2024 An easy way to think of it is that these devices simply increase power output as power demand rises and conversely reduce output as demand falls. A digital regulator provides power on demand. All of the LX200 classic circuit boards use fairly low power so the linear regulators turn the waste into into hand burning heat. Obviously with a system originally designed for a nominal 12v input supply when Meade switched to 18v power supplies and everybody who had an original Meade 12v power supply then switched to 18v supplies we got a lot more waste heat and the capacitor failures begin to happen. All the juice not used by the output side is converted to waste heat, the higher the input voltage the higher the waste heat produced. No amount of heat sinking will change in any significant way the current used or the heat produced by these old regulators due to the way they operate. Hi Jack, The problem is the old fashion linear regulators Meade used in this design.
